Last night, the Villa Marina hosted a majestic homecoming gig for Isle of Man/Brighton based band, Penelope Isles. We interviewed frontman Jack Wolter back in 2014 from his home studio, before he and joint frontperson, sister Lily, left the island to move to Brighton, where they set up the band.

After 4 years of hard graft, the band have recently signed to Brighton based record label, Bella Union, and following this,  the past six months have brought many amazing musical experiences their way.

Last night, the band and their support acts, UK based band, Port Erin and island based artist, Brian Brough, invited us to interview them all backstage before the show started. We made the interview our first ever Facebook Live stream interview through our Isle of Man Gigs page. You can see the interview FB stream below:

Earlier in the day, the band played a free acoustic show at Sound Records in Douglas, to a packed out crowd.

Brian Brough opened the night with some great, laid back, almost lounge, piano based songs, comprised of some covers and originals.

Next up was Port Erin, friends of Jack, the band first played on the island back in 2007 at the legendary Cornerhouse pub. The band have family connections to the island and have a huge, dynamic and cinematic sound.

Finally, Penelope Isles took the stage to huge applause. Instantly filling the room with their presence, They oozed confidence, yet were relaxed, calm and genuinely happy to be playing. The audience, comprised of many of their friends and family, was in awe of the strong melodies and charisma the band exuded. They emitted so much energy from the stage and at times it sounded like Jack’s guitar was posessed by a demon! He made it come alive and almost sound like it was screaming out mix songs. Never forgetting the anthems, the band performed memorable sing alongs and had the audience eating out of their palm from the word go.
