Mera says, “My name is Mera Royle, I am 20 years old and I play the harp and violin. Music has been a part of my life for many years now and in April 2018, I was awarded the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Musician prize. As part of the prize, I was invited to play at Cambridge, Cropredy and Towersey Folk Festivals.

I love folk and Celtic music and it’s been great for me to grow up on the Isle of Man where the culture and Celtic roots are very strong.

I have two EPs out, ‘Woven’ and ‘The Ballaglass set’ which can be found on Spotify, band camp and itunes. CD copies are also available and can be purchased by sending me a message on my facebook page or website, meraroylemusic.com.

I have regularly been interviewed for local radio, and featured on BBC Radio 4 “Notes from a Musical Island” in July 2018. I also featured on Mark Radcliffe’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Show last year, where I had an interview with him and he played two of my tracks on the show.

Mera Royale

I am currently studying music at Newcastle University after taking a year out following my A-levels, and I’m really loving my time there. Newcastle has a great music scene which is why I was really drawn to it. During my time out last year, I was involved with several creative projects as a composer, including working on a film score for a short film produced by Dark Avenue Film. I also worked alongside the brilliant filmmaker, Brook Wassall, to create a timelapse film which I composed and performed the music behind. It was nominated for an award at the Celtic Media festival this year. I also had a lot of fun last summer arranging my own version of Tubular Bells by Mark Oldfield, which I have featured on my new EP.

I love folk and Celtic music and it’s been great for me to grow up on the Isle of Man where the culture and Celtic roots are very strong. It is full of many inspirations and there are lots of opportunities here for young people to take part in concerts and collaborative projects and it’s allowed me to grow into the musician I am today.”
